WHITE CEDAR SWAMP, WELLFLEET

Description: Hike through Marconi Wireless site, along cliffs and woodlands to
White Cedar Swamp trail
Place to Meet: Meet at White Cedar Swamp parking lot, Marconi site, Wellfleet
Driving/Parking Directions: Turn off Route 6 at Marconi light. Take first left
past NPS Headquarters building to end of road
Beach/Parking: Resident permit may be required during the Summer months
Start: (note: underlined words have links to pictures)
- Walk towards cliffs and gazebo, then turn LEFT just before the fence
- Take next LEFT at fork and head to top of dunes
- Walk north along dunes. Enjoy the view of ocean
- Take first LEFT heading WEST to a main intersection
- Bear LEFT (south) and go approx. 200’ and go RIGHT to White Cedar Swam entrance
- Walk the circular boardwalk through the swamp area
- When you return to main path, go LEFT and walk north toward LeCount Hollow Rd
- Bear LEFT at ‘Y’ and continue north on Wireless Rd. Stay on main fire road
- Go LEFT on LeCount Hollow Rd to power lines and go RIGHT up the sand hill to dirt road
- After 200’ or so (near pole #93 to left), turn RIGHT onto trail; go down & then up to trail intersection and bear LEFT
- At ‘Y’ intersection bear LEFT again
- At ‘Y’ intersection bear LEFT for shorter walk or:
- (Option: bear RIGHT here for longer walk. Path will eventually come out on power line, north of where the shorter route does)
- For shorter walk, at ‘Y’ intersection bear LEFT again
- For both routes, cross under power line between poles #94 and #95, continue to Old Kings Highway (a dirt road)
- Turn LEFT on Old Kings Highway, walk until you cross LeCount Hollow Rd again, go through Rail Trail parking lot. (heading SOUTH)
- Once Rail Trail crosses Blackfish Creek, turn LEFT near cement rest area to top of hill
- Turn RIGHT on fire road parallel to Rail Trail, go RIGHT to Cemetery (John Taylor grave site with flag that was George Washington’s lifeguard)
- Back out to road and continue STRAIGHT under power line, heading due EAST (will need to go through a split rail fence)
- Cross fire road to trail continuation –a little jog to the RIGHT. From here to end head EAST
- In 200’ or so, turn LEFT at intersection right to trailhead parking lot.
